Anthony Dohmann, CSP, CHST

Director of Safety

Paragon Safety Group

Anthony is a dynamic safety professional with over 12 years of experience in the residential, commercial, heavy civil, and pharmaceutical industries.  He has designed and implemented safety programs that have changed the culture of several companies that recognize safety as a core value. Anthony is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), and Certified Health and Safety Technician (CHST).

While attending graduate school at Virginia Tech, Anthony got his start in safety completing a co-op for Mass Electric Construction Company in 2010. He was first exposed to the world of safety management on the WMATA Redline project, in Washington, DC. Anthony enjoyed his experience alongside the hard-working men and women in the field and was offered a full-time job in Dallas, TX with Mass Electric shortly after. It was his mentor, William Johnson, who challenged and inspired Anthony instilling the motto to “never change and always be yourself” noting that this is how you excel in safety. It was just meant to be, safety just clicked for Anthony, and has been a great fit for his personality.

After a few years of traveling and working for Mass Electric / Kiewit in DC, Texas, and Virginia, Anthony got an opportunity to come back to North Carolina and become the Safety Director for Earnhardt Grading, Inc. in Stanley. At this family-owned and operated company, Anthony was able to create a safety environment rooted in caring, collaborating, and coaching.  This helped the company demonstrate its culture of commitment.

Anthony has recently moved to the Raleigh area and has started a new role with Paragon Safety Group as the Director of Safety. He is thrilled to play a part in supporting and improving organizations that have a desire to enhance their safety performance (no matter how big or small).  Outside of safety, Anthony enjoys spending time with his wife of 2 years, Hollie, and dog Schmidt.  He recently became a father to a healthy boy, Graham, and is navigating the new world of parenthood. In the past year, he and his family moved from Charlotte to a home in Holly Springs and plan on calling the small town “home” for a long time.

Ashley Heien, MSOS

Graduate of the Occupational Safety Program

(East Carolina University)

Ashley Heien works for a general contractor in the construction industry. She was able to get a job in the safety department because of the experience gained in the Master of Science in Occupational Safety (MSOS) program. The MSOS program has given her a solid background with applied safety management and understanding regulatory and technical aspects as a safety professional. There are plenty of opportunities to develop technical skills as well as critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Consistent presentation development also allowed her to build confidence to become a better speaker. The program is a catalyst for career opportunities and development. After graduation, she plans to continue working in a safety or risk management field in the construction industry.

STUDENT IN SAFETY SPOTLIGHT: APRIL 2021

Zachary Schnell, M.S.

Graduate Student in Occupational Safety

(East Carolina University)

Pamlico Community College

(Environmental Science Program Coordinatory and Instructor)

It’s always worth reading the emails you receive because you never know what opportunities they might present. This became true for me after receiving a BCSP scholarship opportunity sent by Dr. Michael Behm from East Carolina University. The Board of Certified Safety Professionals graciously offered a $5,000 scholarship for current occupational safety program graduate students. After realizing that I qualified to apply, it seemed obvious that I should give it try.

Occupational safety has not always been my first field of study, but it has slowly made its way into my career and future educational work. It all started back when I was a Peace Corps volunteer living in the Philippines as a coastal resource management extension worker. When the world’s 2nd strongest super typhoon, Haiyan, made landfall there, my safety training and experience proved to be quite useful. Serving as the safety officer for my region, I had to consolidate my fellow volunteers, and prepare for the worst. Unknowingly at the time, but this experience made me realize just how important safety training can be for people and their communities.

After my experience in the Philippines, I became the environmental science instructor and program coordinator at Pamlico Community College. It was at PCC, that I felt the need to integrate safety training into the program and start to diversify the environmental science students’ skills to accommodate the ever-changing job market. While working on new safety credentials, I came across the ECU M.S. in Occupational Safety program and thought it would be a great opportunity to further my skills and research to pass along to students and the community. It has been a lot of fun being a student again in the ECU program to continue to learn from the instructors and fellow students in the program. I would like to thank the BCSP organization for providing opportunities like this scholarship. Having additional financial support helps progress my studies, which ultimately gets passed down for students. I am looking forward to continuing the M.S. program and being a life-long learner to provide any support I can.
