President’s Message – January 2019

Jan 21, 2019

Happy New Year 2019! I’m very excited about 2019 and the future of the North Carolina ASSP chapter. I would like to emphasize one key point for your continued growth and success as a safety professional: helping other safety professionals. There’s an old saying I read many years ago: Help enough people achieve their goals and you will achieve your goals as well. The North Carolina Triangle region (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) has a population of over two million residents. Our chapter has a very deep expertise in virtually every aspect of occupational safety – current and former OSHA compliance officers; fleet safety; construction safety; general industry safety; safety management; systems safety; industrial hygiene; process safety management; hazardous materials – to name just a few.

Attend chapter meetings and network with your fellow safety professionals. If you have a safety-related question utilize the vast resources available within our chapter. With a membership over 450 EHS professionals, it is very likely someone can answer your question or guide you in the right direction. Naturally, if you are approached by any safety professional requesting guidance, please take a few moments to assist them. This is an integral part of what the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) is all about: paying it forward.

Another aspect of assistance is volunteering for ASSP leadership positions as well as hosting chapter meetings, if possible. Our chapter survives and thrives solely on the efforts of a group of volunteers. However, executive committee members retire; transfer to other chapters; etc. We are always looking for members interested in serving in leadership positions. If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact a member of the executive committee.

Finally, I want to express my gratitude to the executive committee for everything they accomplish. In 2019, we have already rescheduled two technical meetings. Everyone has jumped through numerous hurdles to get this accomplished. At the next ASSP meeting please thank an executive committee member for their contributions!

In closing, I will emphasize the saying I previously mentioned: Help enough people achieve their goals and you will achieve your goals as well.

Let’s have a great, safe 2019!

Jon
