Tom Cecich, CSP, CIH

ASSP Society President 2016-2017

Tom graduated from the University of Miami in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, then attended the North Carolina State University, graduating in 1974 with a master’s degree in industrial engineering.  He is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and a Certified Safety Professional.

Tom joined Allied Chemical Corporation in 1977 as their Supervisor of Safety/Health/Security and worked there for five years before moving on to IBM Corporation where he was their Manager of Industrial Hygiene until 1985.  He then joined Glaxo and later became VP of EHS Global Business Support after mergers which created GlaxoSmithKline. He retired from GSK after 18 years and since January 2004 he has been an independent consultant and was an Assistant Clinical Research Professor at the Tulane University School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine for nearly 8 years teaching an on-line course in Financial Aspects of H&S as part of the Masters Program in Occupational Health & Safety Management.  He is now a Strategic Board Advisor for Avetta, joining them in 2017.

Tom served for 6 years on the Board of Directors for the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) and served as the BCSP President in 1997.  He was also recognized by Industrial Safety & Hygiene News (ISHN) as one of the Safety Powers 101 – the 101 individuals who most influence the field of occupational safety and health in the United States.  Tom has been a strong supporter of the NC Chapter of ASSP, joining while it was ASSE in 1973.  He has served on the executive committee of the local chapter, was chapter president and received the chapter Safety Professional of the Year (SPY) award for 2012-2013.  In July 2016 he became the Society President for then ASSE, after serving for seven years on the Society’s Board of Directors.
